This term we are looking at consolidating our basic knowledge of Maori culture and Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Our major focus is to pronounce the main Maori place names in Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Te Upoko o te Ika – Welling ton             Tamaki makaurau – Auckland             Aotearoa – New Zealand

Te Ika a Maui – North Island                  Te Waipounamu – South Island        Whakataane – Whakatane (Wairaka came from)

Te Reinga – Cape Reinga                          Turanga-nui-a-Kiwa – Gisborne        Kirikiriroa – Hamilton

Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumamoe – Rotorua

Try first by breaking the words into small chunks.; Whakataane  – Wha / ka/ ta/ a/ ne

One consonant with one vowel – never two vowel together when first trying to read the Maori word.

Say each part, then with practice and speed you will be able to pronounce the word correctly.

Kia kaha i te ako nga reo Maori – Try your best to learn Te Reo Maori.
