Word of the Week – Spell it ‘right’ not wrong!

20 10 2010

Spelling group work…

The challenges that you are set for spelling are to help you improve your vocabulary.  You should be using the words you discover and learn during the week in your everyday writing in the classroom, and I expect to see some of them!!!

Using the KWL you are to brainstorm at least five other synonyms for that word.  You are to use five of those words in a paragraph that explains the meaning of each word.

e.g. If the word was “large” then this would be a good sentence…

The bus was so large that it managed to fit the whole classroom of 50 students in it.

This is an example of a bad sentence…

The bus was really large.

For your spelling words that you need to learn, you are to gather the words from other people in your group and add them to your own five words.  If that does not make up 20 words, fill the remaining spaces with antonyms.

On the day of the spelling test I will also be asking each of you to use a random word off your list in a sentence and tell me the meaning of the word.  If you can’t do that, you will write out that word 3×38, so study up!!!
